Wicked Tuna Pilot Dies in Tragic Boating Accident
Charlie Griffin, a pilot for Wicked Tuna and beloved fisherman, tragically died in a boating accident in North Carolina’s Outer Banks on Sunday night.
Griffin’s body, along with his dog Leila’s, was found Monday on an empty boat. Authorities continue searching for a second boater who went missing.
The Coast Guard reported that Griffin and his companion were en route from Virginia Beach to Wanchese, NC, when they disappeared Sunday evening.
Their boat was discovered adrift, and Griffin’s passing was later confirmed on his Facebook page, Reels of Fortune: “It is with the deepest sadness that we report that Charlie Griffin and his beloved dog, Leila, have died in a boating accident today.”
Griffin was a cherished figure on Wicked Tuna, joining in Season 2 and earning the winning title in Season 4.
Fans and organizations mourned his passing. NC Watermen United stated, “He was well-loved and will be missed by many.” One fan wrote, “Charlie was very knowledgeable and friendly, a great captain.” Thoughts and prayers are with Griffin’s family and friends.
